ScarWork

Scar tissue can affect more than the skin.

After surgery, injury, a burn, or trauma, a scar can influence the fascia around it—contributing to tension, altered movement, sensitivity, or discomfort long after the surface has closed. ScarWork offers a gentle, precise way to address those restrictions.

What is ScarWork?

Gentle work for scar tissue and the fascia around it.

ScarWork was developed by Sharon Wheeler, a pioneer in structural integration. The method is a specialized form of bodywork focused on scar tissue and the fascial layers surrounding it.

Using soft, precise contact directly on and around a scar, the work aims to help soften and integrate the area with surrounding tissue. The focus is not force. It is how tissue quality, movement, alignment, comfort, and function respond.

The visible scar is only one part of the tissue story.

Why scars can matter

Restriction does not always stay where the wound began.

Fascia forms a continuous network through the body. When scar tissue is less mobile than the tissue around it, tension may be carried into nearby or more distant areas and may continue long after the original wound has healed.

01

Tension & tightness

Scar restriction may contribute to pulling, pressure, or tightness. Gentle work may help reduce that restriction in the scar and connected fascia.

02

Movement & flexibility

Less-mobile tissue can influence how a region moves. ScarWork may support easier motion when a joint, region, or movement pattern is affected.

03

Comfort & sensitivity

Some scars remain uncomfortable, tender, numb, sensitive, or guarded. Gentle contact may help the area feel less reactive over time.

04

Tissue integration & appearance

ScarWork may help tissue feel softer and more integrated. In some cases appearance may also change, but function remains the priority and response varies.

Scars we may work with

Every scar has its own context.

Age, size, location, nature, tissue quality, movement, compensation, comfort, and your response all shape whether and how ScarWork fits the treatment plan.

Surgical scarsIncluding C-sections and joint replacements

Injury scarsFrom cuts, tears, or other tissue injury

Accident or burn scarsWhere tissue restriction may extend beyond the visible area

Trauma-related scarsApproached with care for the person and the tissue response

Older and newer scarsTiming and readiness are considered individually

What treatment feels like

Soft contact. Precise movement. No forcing.

ScarWork is gentle and non-invasive. Soft, specific contact is applied on and around the scar, following tissue response rather than forcing change.

The approach varies with the scar's age, size, location, nature, tissue quality, movement, compensation, comfort, and your response. No two scars—or people—follow the same course.

01

Consider the context

The scar is considered in relation to movement, compensation, comfort, and your broader goals.

02

Work with precision

Contact stays gentle and specific to the scar and surrounding fascial layers.

03

Respond and reassess

Treatment follows tissue quality and your response, never a fixed or forced protocol.

Inside the Matrix approach

ScarWork is part of treatment—not a separate service.

ScarWork is not booked separately. When scar restriction matters to movement or treatment goals, it may be incorporated into your normal Matrix Bodywork session.
